CLAY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Clay Township in St. Clair County is getting roughly $692,000 in funding from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to bring on more firefighters.

U.S. Sens. Gary Peters and Debbie Stabenow announced the federal grant in a news release Thursday. Clay Township Supervisor Artie Bryson says the funding means the fire department can hire six firefighters who will work 24-hour shifts.

Another $6,000 in grant money will go to Bedford Township Fire Department in Monroe County for recruiting and retaining first responders.
