NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (AP) - Massachusetts officials say an inmate accused of killing a dog during a burglary dug a hole in the ceiling of his cell using nail clipper parts in a failed escape attempt last month.

The Daily Hampshire Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/1Ls4w2k ) that 38-year-old Angel Villanueva of Springfield pleaded not guilty Friday in Northampton District Court to attempted escape and vandalism charges.

Officials say Villanueva dug a 6-inch-by-9-inch hole in his cell ceiling at the Hampshire County Jail. The hole led to a crawl space.

Villanueva will be held in an isolation cell until at least July 25, when officials will review his case.

Villanueva has pleaded not guilty and is awaiting trial in connection with three home break-ins last year, including one in Easthampton where the homeowners’ poodle was killed.
