LAS VEGAS (AP) - Nevada Highway Patrol says travelers planning to drive from Las Vegas to Southern California on Friday night through a mountain pass north of San Bernardino should wait.

Trooper Loy Hixson said a fast-moving wildfire that shut down a section of the freeway in both directions through the Cajon Pass was still a couple hundred miles south of Las Vegas and wasn’t causing a traffic backup yet for drivers still in Nevada heading to California.

But Hixson says the California Highway Patrol has said it could take a few hours for the section of freeway to re-open.

Dozens of vehicles were abandoned when the wildfire moved across the freeway lanes destroying several of the cars and trucks.
