PORT HURON, Mich. (AP) - The Port Huron-to-Mackinac sailboat race is making Michigan history.

The race is being recognized Friday with a state historical marker at Port Huron Yacht Club. The two-sided markers celebrate history all over Michigan.

The race has been held since 1925 and now is called the Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race. This year’s contest sets sail on Saturday.

U.S. Rep. Candice Miller, an avid sailor whose district includes Port Huron, will represent the state at the unveiling of the marker. The marker says President Franklin Roosevelt urged the race to continue during World War II as a way for young sailors to learn navigation and other skills.
