SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) - Mourners gathered at a church in Scranton to remember a city police officer who died of head injuries while chasing robbery suspects.

Bagpipes echoed Friday as hundreds of officers from departments in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania stood in a line three deep on Wyoming Avenue to honor Patrolman John Wilding.

A riderless horse followed the hearse that took Wilding’s body to St. Peter’s Cathedral for a funeral Mass.

The 29-year-old officer jumped a fence and fell 15 feet while chasing suspects early Saturday.

Scranton Mayor Bill Courtright says Wilding gave his life to the city he loved and city owes him its gratitude. He says Wilding lived and died a hero.

His surviving family members include a wife and two young children.
