WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) - The Massachusetts funeral director who became the center of controversy when he handled funeral arrangements for one of the Boston Marathon bombers wants to help the unidentified girl found dead on Boston Harbor’s shore.

Peter Stefan, owner of Graham, Putnam & Mahoney Funeral Parlors in Worcester, tells The Telegram & Gazette (https://bit.ly/1CGLHao ) he is offering to handle funeral arrangements for the toddler for free.

The girl, thought to be about 4 year’s old, was found in a trash bag June 25 by a woman walking her dog.

Stefan says he doesn’t want to see the girl buried in a pauper’s grave.

A state police spokesman says authorities appreciate Stefan’s offer, which is one of several offering to help the girl. Her body remains at the state medical examiner’s office.
