BYRAM, N.J. (AP) - Police have ruled that a 55-year-old Lake Mohawk man killed himself by intentionally setting his home on fire the same day he was scheduled to be evicted for not paying his taxes or mortgage.

NJ.com reports (https://bit.ly/1JmiONt ) a Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office investigation determined that Matthew Smith set two fires in the living room of his Glenside Trail home in April before officers arrived to perform the court-ordered eviction.

A medical examiner ruled Smith’s cause of death was smoke inhalation from the blaze.

Police say officers were unable to enter the home upon arrival due to the severity of the fire and the “extreme clutter” inside the residence that prevented doors from opening.

Firefighters from several neighboring towns were alerted and extinguished the blaze in about 10 minutes.
