DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) - University of Michigan’s solar car team has unveiled the vehicle it hopes will make them victors in the Australian Outback.

The Ann Arbor school took the wraps off the car it calls “Aurum” Friday at The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn. Aurum - named after the Latin word for “gold” - is the team’s ride for October’s weeklong, 1,800-mile Bridgestone World Solar Challenge.

Team members say they worked to develop the most aerodynamic, streamlined shape. They also improved mechanical systems, including suspension, steering and brakes.

The car’s steering wheel has moved to the right and places the driver so far to the edge that an elbow bulge was built into the chassis.

The team finished third three times in the biennial contest. It’s won the American Solar Challenge five times.
