PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - An 18-year-old Providence man has been charged with murdering an Army veteran and stabbing his friend in a pharmacy parking lot.

Erico Montalvo appeared in Providence District Court on Friday to face the charges connected to Saturday’s incident in Providence. He was ordered held without bail pending another court hearing on July 28.

Police say Montalvo killed 26-year-old Colby Mendonca of Pawtucket and stabbed 25-year-old Russell Gleason during a fight among strangers early Saturday morning.

Prosecutors say Montalvo admitted to city investigators that he stabbed both men.

Montalvo’s lawyer declined comment outside the courtroom.

Mendonca, who served in Afghanistan, was to be buried with military honors Friday at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Bristol. He leaves behind a 3-year-old daughter.
