BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - A rally is scheduled to protest the planned removal of a Confederate monument from a Birmingham park.

Justin Mooney is a member of the Alabama Flaggers and tells WBMA-TV (https://bit.ly/1RF2gdk ) the group is protesting at Linn Park Saturday morning because they don’t feel their voices are being heard. City leaders recently voted to remove the memorial from the park.

Confederate battle flags and monuments have come under renewed scrutiny after nine black churchgoers were fatally shot during Bible study in Charleston, South Carolina. The shooter was photographed with the flag several times and authorities have said he targeted the victims because they were black.

Some have said Confederate flags and memorials are about Southern heritage, others argue white supremacy is at the heart of what the flag and monuments celebrate.
