OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Officials at Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha have announced the new names of sea lion pups born in early June.

The male seal lion has been named, “Surf,” and the female “Saki.” The names were selected from more than 2,200 submitted in a naming contest the zoo held from July 2 through July 9. The winning names were selected by the sea lions’ keepers.

The name “Saki,” suggested by a 2-year-old girl, is a Japanese name meaning hope and blossom. Zoo keepers selected “Surf,” suggested by a 7-year-old boy, because they thought it was fitting for a male sea lion.

The pups are currently on display at the zoo. Saki now weighs about 20 pound. Surf is about 25 pounds.
