KERNSTOWN, Va. (AP) - More than 30 acres adjacent to the Kernstown battlefield have been purchased by the Civil War Trust.

The Winchester Star (https://bit.ly/1OfHsCZ ) reports that the nonprofit preservation group paid $440,000 to acquire the 35-acre property from the Donna Wilkins Downing Trust.

Civil War Trust spokesman Jim Campi says the group is applying for federal and state grants that would cover about half of the cost.

Campi says the property will be transferred to the Kernstown Battlefield Association once the money used to buy it is replenished.

The battlefield association owns 315 acres where the first and second Kernstown battles were fought during the Civil War.

Campi says a conservation easement must be placed on the property through the Virginia Department of Historic Resources.
