STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. (AP) - Police say two 19-year-old men from Detroit’s northern suburbs were killed when their car crashed as they sped away from an attempted police traffic stop.

Troy police say their officers saw the car being driven recklessly and tried to stop it, but it took off. They say the officers broke off their chase when the car left the city early Sunday.

The Oakland Press of Pontiac (https://bit.ly/1OpBEYs ) says the car crashed in neighboring Sterling Heights at 2:40 a.m.

Police say the driver was from Sterling Heights and the passenger was from Troy. Police say they’re withholding the men’s names until their families are notified.

Troy police say alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.
