NEW YORK (AP) - Animal Care and Control says it has a “staggering number of cats” in its Manhattan shelter.

The organization issued a plea Monday for people to “open their hearts and homes” to one or more feline friends.

April through September is “kitten season.” That means shelters nationwide are inundated with cats.

ACC says it’s taken in nearly 10,000 cats so far this year. That’s about 1,000 more than at this time last year.

It’s waiving adoption fees for all cats one year or older.

Adopters also can meet their potential matches at ACC’s Brooklyn and Staten Island locations, and through its mobile adoption events.
