EAST PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (AP) - A Long Island woman has been charged with animal cruelty after authorities were alerted to her emaciated dog, which had rocks in its stomach and had to be euthanized.

Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Roy Gross says Madison Cammarata was given an appearance ticket Sunday on the misdemeanor charge. The 22-year-old has a September court date.

It’s unclear whether Cammarata has a lawyer who can comment on the allegation. There was no immediate response to a message left Monday at a possible phone number for her. She lives in East Patchogue.

The SPCA was alerted after a 7-year-old pit bull named Duncan was brought in May to the Guardians of Rescue animal-welfare group. SPCA photos show Duncan’s ribs, spine and hip bones sticking out.
