BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Three Louisiana hospices are among the more than 140 selected to take part in a new program that allows Medicare members who qualify to receive hospice care while continuing medical treatment.

The Advocate reports (https://bit.ly/1LzQKuw) the Louisiana facilities are St. Joseph Hospice LLC in Baton Rouge; St. Joseph Hospice and Palliative Care Northshore LLC in Covington; and St. Joseph Hospice of Cenla LLC in Alexandria.

The Medicare Choices Model provides coverage for enrollees who qualify under the hospice benefit and for so-called “dual eligibles,” who qualify for the Medicaid hospice benefit.

U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia M. Burwell said the model gives doctors, patients and their families the power of choice.
