KINGMAN, Ariz. (AP) - A Kingman woman has been accused of escaping from custody and jumping into a stranger’s car shortly before she was set to leave a hospital for jail.

Patricia Yevette Pena, 32, was first booked into jail on Sunday on tampering with evidence and drug charges.

Pena was then transferred to Kingman Regional Medical Center for a pre-existing medical condition, the sheriff’s office says.

She was set to be sent back to jail from the hospital on Tuesday but instead escaped around 9:30 a.m.

Pena was wearing a hospital gown and was barefoot when she fled and jumped into a car that was stopped at an intersection. Pena was then taken into custody.

Police say the driver of the car was a stranger and was taken aback when Pena jumped in.
