WHEATFIELD, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities in say a former jail guard has been seriously injured in an explosion while making a bomb in his western New York garage.

The Niagara County Sheriff’s Office says the blast occurred around 3:30 a.m. Monday in a detached garage at a home in Wheatfield, 10 miles north of Buffalo.

Deputies say a woman living at the home called 911 to report the explosion.

Police arrived to find a 44-year-old man with a “catastrophic” injury to his foot. The man was airlifted to Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo.

Sheriff James Voutour says the man is a former Niagara County corrections officer. His name hasn’t been released.

The sheriff’s office is investigating, along with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
