WINCHESTER, Va. (AP) - Hiking enthusiasts from across the nation are encamped at Shenandoah University this week.

The attraction is the 40th gathering of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. One of the organizers calls the Winchester conference “a big reunion.”

The Winchester Star (https://bit.ly/1DqAtl5 ) reports that more than 1,000 people are expected to attend the meeting, which was organized by the Potomac Appalachian Trial Club and the Mountain Club of Maryland.

The mission of the conservancy is to preserve and manage the 2,200-mile trail, which stretches from Georgia to Maine.

Part of the conference includes excursions to historic locations and, of course, hiking along the local section of the Appalachian Trail.

The conference ends Friday.
