SURRY, Va. (AP) - More than a dozen people face boating under the influence charges following an enforcement effort on the James River in Surry County.

The Daily Press (https://bit.ly/1RMoNEY ) reports that a multi-agency safety checkpoint resulted in 15 arrests.

Conservation police officers and Virginia Marine Police also issued a total of 38 summonses for boating safety equipment and registration violations.

The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries led the checkpoint on Saturday. The agency says the enforcement effort coincided with the Port, Peanut and Pine Festival at Chippokes State Park but wasn’t connected with the festival.

Two people were arrested in the park by Virginia Park Police on charges of being drunk in public.
