MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) - A man has pleaded not guilty to stealing an 87-year-old woman’s purse from her church pew.

The woman told Manchester police she was attending a service at the First Congregational Church on July 12. She said a man entered the church midway through the service and took a seat behind her. Two witnesses told police when she got up to stand, the man reach over the pew and took the purse.

The witnesses followed the man to the church basement and confronted him, but he fled. The purse was found in a bathroom stall, but the woman’s house and car keys and cash were missing.

Police arrested 27-year-old Steve Doiron of Manchester at his apartment on July 19. He appeared in court Monday; a trial was scheduled for Sept. 1.
