NEWCASTLE, England (AP) - Newcastle has signed Serbia striker Aleksandar Mitrovic from Belgian club Anderlecht on a five-year contract.

Newcastle has not announced the fee for Mitrovic, who scored 44 goals in 90 appearances for Anderlecht, but says the deal is the fourth biggest transfer in the club’s history.

Steve McLaren, the Newcastle manager, says “we have fought off a lot of competition to secure a top young talent in Europe.”

The 20-year-old Mitrovic, who has played 13 times for Serbia, says “I can’t wait to play my first game here.”

He is the club’s second signing of the offseason transfer window, after Netherlands midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum joined from PSV Eindhoven.
