VAN, W.Va. (AP) - State police say the driver fled the scene after a sport utility vehicle plunged 200 feet down a mountainside in southern West Virginia.

State police tell media outlets that Darnell Mendoza has been living in the country illegally.

The accident occurred Saturday night on Bolt Mountain in the area of the Boone-Raleigh-Wyoming county lines. Emergency crews found the SUV on Saturday night, along with a man’s footprints near the wreck.

Mendoza’s wife contacted state police and said she had spoken to him by phone. She said she didn’t know his location.

State police say Mendoza has been living in Logan County. A search for him is continuing.

Mendoza faces several charges stemming from the wreck, including driving without a license and fleeing the scene of an accident.
