WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - A grand jury has indicted a North Carolina man on a first-degree murder charge after police say he told officers he killed his 72-year-old caregiver with a guitar.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1gMynXS) a grand jury indicted 60-year-old David Darrell Thomas in the death of Ruby Duncan Johnson. Thomas is jailed without bond.

Officers went to Johnson’s house June 18 and Thomas told police that he hit Johnson with a guitar. Officers found Johnson’s body inside her home.

Johnson was appointed in 2006 to be Thomas’ guardian after Thomas was declared incompetent. In May, Thomas filed a petition to have Johnson removed as his guardian, although it wasn’t clear why.

Online records do not say whether Thomas has an attorney.
