SALEM, Ore. (AP) - A $5 million lawsuit has been filed against the Salem-Keizer School District on behalf of a teenage girl who was sexually abused by her West Salem High School basketball coach.

The Statesman Journal reports (https://stjr.nl/1Lr1SLM ) the complaint filed Monday claims that the district and its employees failed to protect the girl from sexual abuse that occurred in 2013.

Emrance Berger was sentenced to 38 months in prison in November on multiple sex-abuse charges.

Berger and the school district are named specifically in the lawsuit. The complaint alleges that district employees ignored numerous complaints about Berger’s behavior toward the girl and didn’t provide her with counseling or other support.

A district spokesman says the district generally doesn’t comment on lawsuits out of court.
