BLOUNTVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - An attorney for Sullivan County has confirmed commissioners there met in private last week to discuss the budget, in violation of Tennessee’s Open Meetings Act.

Attorney Dan Street looked into the private meeting at the request of the Kingsport Times-News (https://bit.ly/1fZNBZy ). He told the paper he has since met with some of the commissioners to explain that the law does not allow elected officials to meet in private and deliberate toward a decision. He said some commissioner had to be persuaded that the meeting should not have happened.

However, Street said the commissioners have now apologized and promised not to do it again.

The Sullivan County Commission has not yet approved a budget for the fiscal year that began July 1.
