DENVER (AP) - Tolls on the U.S. 36 Express Lanes in Denver will begin Wednesday and Colorado Department of Transportation officials are encouraging motorists to set up pre-paid accounts.

The Denver Post reports (https://dpo.st/1VnlTpK ) that the toll rates on the newly added express lanes between Interlocken Loop and Federal Boulevard vary by time of day and account status, with fees from $1.25 to $6.50.

Both pre-paid accounts reduce the price of the tolls, though prices still increase during peak hours. ExpressToll passes are free to enroll in and are geared toward individual drivers, whereas frequent carpoolers can invest $15 in a switchable transponder, which has an “HOV” setting to be able to drive in the toll lane for free with a passenger.

All tolls are optional as only one lane in each direction requires fees.
