MARSHALL, Ark. (AP) - A 5-year-old Mayflower boy has drowned in the Buffalo National River in Arkansas.

According to the National Park Service, the child drowned in the Tyler Bend area of the national park Monday. The service says the boy was with family when he began to wade into shallow water and inadvertently got into deeper water. Officials say his inflatable ring did not keep him above water.

According to Buffalo National River Chief Ranger Karen Bradford, the boy was pulled from the water and nearby canoeists began CPR until medical and park personnel arrived. Bradford said the child was pronounced dead at the scene.
