CENTREVILLE, Ala. (AP) - A man suspected of abducting his estranged girlfriend and killing her sister was captured at a motel in west Alabama late Wednesday, and authorities said the woman was safe.

Bibb County District Attorney Michael Jackson said John Barry Hubbard, 60, was arrested in Eutaw, but a search continued for a possible accomplice who rented a motel room for Hubbard.

Hubbard’s estranged girlfriend, Tammy Carpenter, was not hurt, Jackson said.

Authorities said Hubbard went to Carpenter’s home in Bibb County on Tuesday afternoon and forced her into his pickup truck before fatally shooting her sister, 30-year-old Kandi Murphy, and driving away.

Court records show Carpenter filed a restraining order against Hubbard about two months ago, but the request was denied.

Jackson said the man will face charges including capital murder and kidnapping.

The prosecutor said Hubbard is the son of James Barney Hubbard, put to death by lethal injection on Aug. 5, 2004, for a 1977 killing in Tuscaloosa County.
