FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) - Former hospital CEO Mike Powers has been named interim chancellor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports (https://bit.ly/1CUJkAp ) that University of Alaska President Pat Gamble announced the decision Tuesday.

Powers retired three weeks ago after 20 years at the helm of Fairbanks Memorial Hospital. He replaces chancellor Brian Rogers, who announced his departure in April after seven years with the university.

Gamble says Powers, who has served as a member of the UA Board of Regents since 2011, will help position the school for the job of bringing on a permanent replacement.

Powers says he is not going to pursue the chancellor appointment permanently.

The 64-year-old Rogers is a former state legislator who became acting chancellor in April 2008 and became chancellor outright in May 2009.
