HAMPTON, Iowa (AP) - A former jail is for sale in northern Iowa.

The Mason City Globe Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/1TPOfak ) that the jail is attached to a two-story home that was the sheriff’s residence in Franklin County. An 1883 book on county history says the home and jail were built in Hampton by D.W. Dow in 1880 for nearly $9,900. The property is listed for sale at nearly $50,000.

The jail was closed in 1988 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.

Property records show Franklin County transferred ownership to the Hampton Main Street organization in 2004. It has been sold to private owners twice since then.
