PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The former director of the Providence’s Department of Public Works is suing city officials, including Mayor Jorge Elorza, on allegations that he was let go because he refused to promote or hire unqualified individuals based on ethnicity.

Paul Thomas’ lawsuit alleges he was wrongfully terminated from his nearly three-year position because of his refusal to partake in “discriminatory hiring practices.”

Rhode Island Public Radio reports (https://bit.ly/1MHnZut ) the suit also names as defendants former Mayor Angel Taveras and Human Resources Director Sybil Bailey.

The suit also accuses the city of wrongfully firing him in 2012 based on his medical condition, which caused him to miss a meeting that Bailey, who fired Thomas by letter, had requested.

A spokesman for Elorza says the law department is reviewing the complaint and plans to respond in court.
