LOS ANGELES (AP) - A photographer was arrested Wednesday after being found with a loaded gun at a vehicle checkpoint for a Los Angeles event where Vice President Joe Biden was scheduled to speak, police said.

Larry Ira Estrin, 62, of Los Angeles was arrested on suspicion of possessing a loaded weapon and was being held on $35,000 bail.

Estrin didn’t appear to have any criminal intent, police Cmdr. Andrew Smith said. The loaded firearm was in a locked box in the vehicle, police said.

State law requires that firearms in vehicles be unloaded and stored in a locked container.

The weapon was discovered hours before Biden was to speak at a business about increasing the minimum wage. Los Angeles recently approved raising the base wage to $15 an hour by 2020.

Los Angeles County supervisors took a step Tuesday toward a similar goal.
