MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Republican state Rep. Chris Kapenga has won a special election for the Wisconsin state Senate to fill a seat being vacated by Republican Sen. Paul Farrow.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (https://bit.ly/1JwUhp5 ) reports preliminary results released Tuesday night show Kapenga defeated Democrat Sherryll Shaddock. The district covers part of Waukesha County and is heavily Republican.

Kapenga ran for the seat in 2012 but lost to Farrow in the Republican primary. Shaddock lost to Farrow in the 2014 general election, receiving 26 percent of the vote.

Farrow resigned last week from his seat to work as Waukesha County executive.
