PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) - Police say a Portsmouth sheriff’s deputy accidentally shot herself in the leg while holstering her gun.

Police tell media outlets that the incident occurred Tuesday afternoon outside City Hall.

Portsmouth Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Lee Cherry says the deputy had secured her gun in her patrol car so she could enter the Portsmouth City Jail to search a female prisoner. Jail policy prohibits deputies from carrying guns inside the facility.

Cherry says the deputy later returned to the car and retrieved the gun. The gun fired as she was holstering it and getting into the car.

The bullet struck the deputy’s right thigh. Cherry says the injury isn’t life threatening.

The deputy’s name hasn’t been released.
