ERIE, Pa. (AP) - One teenager was killed and five other youths wounded in what police described as a “shootout” on an Erie street, authorities said Saturday.

The violence apparently erupted just before midnight Friday, police told the Erie Times-News (https://bit.ly/1D1IJx4 ).

“Right now we are still trying to put together all the pieces of what happened,” Chief Randy Bowers said. “It was a chaotic scene. We are still working to separate witnesses from suspects from victims.”

Police said many teenagers were in the area, where Bowers said investigators were told that a resident of a nearby apartment building was holding an “eviction party.”

Deputy Coroner Korac Timon said 16-year-old Elijah Jackson of Erie died of a single gunshot wound to the head just after 1 a.m. Saturday. Another youth was reported in critical condition.

“There were people leaning on my fence and sitting on my porch,” Danielle Heitzenrater, who lives across from the apartment building, told the newspaper. “I called 911. … Then I heard shots. My husband pushed me off our bed and I went to my daughter’s bedroom. I looked outside a little bit later and saw a guy lying face down on the ground in front of my house. He wasn’t moving.”

Police said three handguns were found and more than a dozen shell casings were left at the scene. One gun was found near a vehicle that crashed into a utility pole just after the gunfire, and police planned to talk to the driver, who was taken to a hospital. Four victims were taken to a hospital for treatment.
