PHOENIX (AP) - An accident involving a tractor-trailer rig and a van killed two people and clogged traffic on a major Phoenix freeway during the Monday morning commute.

The accident occurred on southbound Interstate 17 in north Phoenix at about 6 a.m. Southbound traffic was restricted to one lane in the immediate aftermath of the accident, resulting in a miles-long backup.

DPS spokesman Tim Case said the truck was broken down and parked on the shoulder when the van struck it from behind.

News video showed the badly damaged van partly jammed under the tail end of the big rig’s trailer.

Case said the truck driver was uninjured but two people in the van were killed and a third person in that vehicle was hospitalized.
