July 27—LENOIR — A Lenoir man is accused of sexually assaulting a young boy.

George William Sheffield, 51, of Elizabeth Street NW was arrested shortly before 7 p.m. Friday on a charge of first-degree sexual assault. The arrest report says only that the child was under 13.

Capt. Couby Stilwell of the Lenoir Police Department declined to say how old the boy is, what Sheffield is accused of doing or the time period covered by the allegation, but it reportedly happened at Sheffield’s house.

The boy’s mother reported it to police, Stilwell said.

Sheffield does not have any prior criminal convictions in North Carolina.

In Florida in 1982 he was charged with sexual assault, but the charge was dismissed, Stilwell said. In 1995, he was convicted of misdemeanor resisting an officer, according to the Orange County, Florida, Clerk of Court’s office.
