CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) - Cranston Mayor Allan Fung is denying comment by the head of the state police that Fung and his staff have interfered with the city’s police department.

Col. Steven O’Donnell said in a letter to Fung that it was a key management issue discovered in a $500,000 review Fung sought after a 2013 parking-ticket-writing scandal. The letter was leaked to Providence news media Monday ahead of a city council meeting.

Fung, an unsuccessful Republican candidate for governor last year, had invited state police to temporarily take control of the department. O’Donnell said while state police were in charge, Fung reinstated a suspended captain who was a main figure in the ticket complaints.

Fung said O’Donnell gave him the full report last week and he’s asked Attorney General Peter Kilmartin to review it for confidential information that can’t be released.
