NEWTON, N.C. (AP) - Authorities say a 16-year-old girl has died after she was shot while taking a picture of a gun an acquaintance was holding.

The Catawba County Sheriff’s Office told local media a 21-year-old man was considering buying a .22-caliber rifle and the girl was taking a picture of the weapon Sunday afternoon in Newton when he accidentally pulled the trigger.

Selena Lewis was taken to a hospital and died before she could be flown to a Charlotte hospital.

No charges have been filed. A report will be turned over to the district attorney’s office.

This story has been corrected to show that the girl did not shoot herself.
