SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) - A real estate developer and commercial roofer has announced that he is the new owner of a struggling northeastern Pennsylvania mall.

The (Scranton) Times-Tribune (https://bit.ly/1ID7LVF ) reports that 36-year-old John Basalyga said he closed on the deal Monday for the Mall at Steamtown, paying mall owner LNR Partners a little more than $5.5 million.

Basalyga in a statement called the mall “a landmark in downtown Scranton” and said he was “excited and honored to be involved in its future.”

Basalyga gave no indication of his plans but noted that Kay Jewelers will leave at the end of its lease and said he was aware of that fact before last month’s auction.

Basalyga owns Eastern Roofing Systems Inc., which installs roofs on commercial and industrial buildings in a dozen states.
