BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. (AP) - The Chicago Fire have claimed Brazilian forward Gilberto off waivers.

Gilberto, 26, had seven goals and five assists in 28 league games for Toronto last season. He had been on loan to Vasco da Gama, but the Brazilian club released him recently.

The Fire also signed former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba on Monday, then traded him to Montreal for general and targeted allocation money.

In order to accommodate Gilberto as a designated player, the Fire used targeted allocation money to lower the budget charge of Kennedy Igboananike, freeing a designated player slot.

Prior to his time in MLS, the 5-foot-10 Gilberto played for five teams in the Brazilian Serie A.
