July 27—OSKALOOSA — It was the “Roarin’ ‘20s” Saturday night in the Penn Central Mall Center Court as William Penn held its Navy and Gold Gala.

Attendees were decked out in their evening best as they competed for the “Pinstripes and Pearls” Best Dressed Contest and the Best Table Decoration Contest. The university has staged the Navy & Gold Gala for four years.

“It’s a fundraiser for the Booster Club,” William Penn President John Ottosson said. “It’s dinner and an auction.”

There are live and silent auctions for attendees to bid on items.

William Penn Vice President for Advancement Marsha Riordan said there were about 205 attendees.

“This is a good turnout,” Ottosson said.

Director of Community Relations Nik Rule said the Booster Club has helped the university purchase passenger vans in the past and they intend to do the same this year as well as some other speical projects.

The Booster Club has seen its ranks swell from 90 to 200 during the past three years, Rule said.

Rule said the Navy & Gold Gala is one of two big fundraiser events for the club — along with its membership drive.

“It’s amazing to see the support from the community,” Rule said.
