BUNNLEVEL, N.C. (AP) - State air quality officials are investigating after dozens of tires burned in some woods in Harnett County.

Firefighters were called to some woods in the Bunnlevel community around 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

Flat Branch Fire Chief Mike Brown told The Fayetteville Observer (https://bit.ly/1LMOhyy) says someone dropped a cigarette in the woods and the fire spread to piles of old tires. Brown said the tires were being stored by someone who owns a tire shop in Spring Lake.

Brown says about two dozen firefighters from five departments responded. He says it took about 45 minutes to control the fire.

The Harnett County Fire Marshall’s office is investigating.
