PETERSBURG, Va. (AP) - Petersburg has renamed two streets to mark its ties with Virginia State University.

Fleet and Canal streets are now University Boulevard

The Progress-Index (https://bit.ly/1OKbDmX ) reports that the city announced the installation of new signs last week. The name change was approved by City Council in June.

Virginia State interim president Pamela Hammond says Petersburg has long been the university’s “front door.”

Some residents had opposed the change because Virginia State is located in Ettrick. They also said the Fleet and Canal street names had ties to Petersburg’s commercial history.
