WINDSOR, N.Y. (AP) - State police say a motorcyclist is dead after he was hit by a car that swerved to avoid a black bear in upstate New York.

The crash happened around 9:40 p.m. Friday in Windsor. Police say 56-year-old Thomas Poole was ejected from his motorcycle when he was hit by a Honda Civic veering to avoid a bear that was just struck and killed on Interstate 86 outside Binghamton.

Poole was taken to UHS Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City, where the Woonsocket, Rhode Island, man was pronounced dead. The driver of the other vehicle was treated for minor injuries.

Police say the bear was struck and killed by a Jeep Cherokee moments before the collision that killed Poole.

The crash is under investigation.

This story has been corrected to show the name of the hospital is UHS Wilson Medical Center instead of Wilson Memorial Hospital.
