SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Authorities are investigating after a fire at a West Valley City stable killed 11 animals.

Police say fireworks set off in the area overnight might have sparked the blaze that killed nine horses as well as a goat and a sheep early Monday morning.

West Valley City police spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku says investigators believe the animals were already dead when firefighters arrived at the scene about 3:30 a.m.

Police say a Shetland pony survived the fire. One neighbor who tried unsuccessfully to let the animals out of the burning building suffered minor burns.

Officers say there was no electricity to the structure, which was leased out to house animals owned by different people. The owners live on the other end of a relatively large lot.
