July 27—EVANSVILLE — A 17-year-old boy died Monday afternoon after he was shot inside an Evansville apartment.

The circumstances of the Deviante Gaines’ death were still unclear, Evansville Police Department spokesman Sgt. Jason Cullum said. The boy was identified by the Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Office.

Authorities were called to an apartment complex in the 2800 block of Lodge Avenue at 12:05 p.m. Despite attempts of aid by people inside the apartment, Gaines was pronounced dead at the scene, Cullum said.

“At this point, we’re not clear what led up to the shooting,” he said.

At around 7 p.m. Monday, most police had left the scene. Only a few residents of the apartment complex could be seen outside near where police had parked their vehicles.

Several people in the neighborhood said they knew Gaines.

Warren Toliver, 28, said he knew him well. They used to hang out, play basketball and video games together.

“He could put a smile on your face. Even if you had a bad day, he could change that all,” Toliver said. “If everyone was going at it, he’d come over and crack jokes and make everyone forget about it. He’d keep you out of trouble.”

Investigators believe several people were inside the apartment when Gaines was shot and that some of them may have left the area before police arrived.

An autopsy has been scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday.
