July 28—BEMIDJI — Jamie Jacobson’s job involves a little bit of everything, and that variety is something she loves.

“Everyday it’s a little bit different, I’m at camp for a couple hours or if I’m helping out at pickleball in the evenings. So it’s something new almost everyday and something different all the time,” she said.

Jacobson has been the recreation coordinator for the Bemidji Parks and Recreation department for the past three years.

Growing up, Jacobson was often involved in the recreation department working at the summer pool, as well seeing her dad work in the field. These led her to knowing what she wanted to study when in college.

“I got a background in recreation, as well as kind of the communications .. .like writing flyers and kind of doing publications,” she explained.

In her position, Jacobson works to plan and put on all the of the programs and activities hosted by her department.

“We have programs all the way from preschoolers — all the way up to our family programs — so I’m working with a huge age range,” she said.

Jacobson has the ability to change aspects of events, and add new events depending on how things went in the past ran and what the community may want.

“The Kick Up the Dirt was our 5k trail run, we changed that a little bit this year to adding a color element to that,” she said. “We had a Lego summer camp and a lot of the kids wanted something during the school year, so then I did an after school Lego club program.”

She also takes inspiration from popular recreation events in the Twins Cities, and host similar events in the Bemidji area.

“It’s easier for families to participate in big events, that are held in the cities — but you know can’t always get to the cities, so having something up here is very similar. I just want programs affordable and accessible to everyone in the city,” she explained.

Of the all events held throughout the year, Jacobson’s favorites include the movie in the park event and World Wide Day of Play. Jacobson can see herself staying in Bemidji with this job.

“This is definitely where I enjoy being, I can see myself here for a very long time. I enjoy the people I work with, I enjoy the community so I just plan on staying around for awhile.”
