MADISON HEIGHTS, Va. (AP) - Amherst County authorities are seeking to identify a partial human skull found on the bank of the James River.

The Amherst County Sheriff’s Office tells The News & Advance (https://bit.ly/1D5ah4T ) that police don’t know how long the skull was on the riverbank.

The newspaper says a Madison Heights couple found the skull in May in the Galt’s Mill area. A friend of the couple notified authorities on July 14 after the couple showed the skull to them. Investigators obtained a search warrant and seized the skull.

The skull was sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Roanoke.
